Fleece Fun

Yet another exciting week has passed here at my workshop.  Not only did we have a fun day on Friday making handbags and hats, I have been working my own fleece.

At first I thought I had bitten off more than I could chew but it turns out its just another adventure on the felting road.  As all felters know in order to make felt we need to add hot water and soap to fleece, we also know that in order to clean something we also need to use hot water and soap!  Here-in lies the first hurdle to producing your own wool fleece – how to get all the muck (and thats putting it mildly!) and lanolin out of the sheeps coat without felting it in the process.  After finding sutable containers and dividing the horrid grey, mucky, matted fleece into appropriate chunks I set about soaking.  Do you know how hard it is not to touch, swirl, scrub something so dirty?

After several soakings and rinsings and a good few hours drying it was time to collect the children from school before setting about carding the now beautiful fluffy white fleece.  This was the part of the process I was most looking forward to – and guess what?  Yep my daughter comes through the door and says ” ooh fleece!  Can I card it?  I’m much better than you at it!”  So off she went into the garden.  She is probably right – she did do a wonderful job.  However, the rain came and the laundrette/garden closed so I now must wait for the return of glorious sunshine to repeat the process.

I cant wait to see what fabulous felt I can make with it. Perhaps I might even try natural dyes!

Summer Fun

I have finally finished setting the workshops for the Summer, includng four weeks of felting fun for the kids.  Wednesday’s in August are going to be dedicated to ensuring my passion for creating fabulous felt from colourful fluff is passed on to as many youngsters as possible.

Whilst I was on a run with the calendar I decided to set a few more course dates and before I knew it I was organising the workshops for Christmas gifts and Stockings!  Where is the year going? Well, wherever its going, its doing it fast!

Its all very busy here in the design workshop creating more pieces for display, and experimenting with techniques, colours, textures and designs.  Look out for more pictures coming soon.

Clever Kids

Being the kids holiday week, today bought a new kids workshop.  With just a few children joining me, most of which had previously had a go at felting before, I decided to set them an ambitious task of making their own seamless purse! – in just two and a half hours.

It could have ended in disaster, but the kids all rose to the challenge and produced a fantastic purse or bag - even my four year old!  Today’s workshop has shown me that kids accept a challenge and throw themselves at it so much more readily than most of us adults.  Whilst we are analysing each process and ensuring that our colours ‘work’, they are getting stuck in and learning as they go!  Thats not to say that we don’t need to understand what we are doing.  When we spend time analysing the processes we understand why felting works the way it does and after completing our first bag we are able to remember how to do it next time.  I’m not sure how many of the kids that followed my instructions today would be able to come back tomorrow and make another bag without full instructions.

Whilst teaching children it is often us who learn the most!

What a Week!

Well, I thought it was about time I started my blog on here, and given the crazy but fab week I have just had what better time to start.

On Tuesday I joined 40 Year 10 students working on their GCSE Art projects, I was very apprenhensive as the majority of children I have worked with up to now have been year 7 and below.  I really didn’t have to worry, they were a great bunch of kids who got stuck into the felting and created some great pieces. I had a fantastic day.

The remainder of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I spent preparing for the new event that was taking place at Lincoln Castle – ’1000 years of Traditional Crafts’, a fantastic event that allowed members of the public to view areas of the Castle and Cathedral that are usually not open and to try their hand at many different crafts.  I was in the Castle Prison and occupied a 5′ by 8′ cell for the day and believe me that felt small at the beginning of the day, but when you have 15 people crammed into that little space all watching a demonstration and then wanting to ‘have a go’ you really know what ‘small’ is!  It was an amazingly well attended day  and I had a constant stream of people coming into my cell, so much so I finally got lunch at 4.30pm!  The day had started at 6.30am and I finally got home at 7pm and looking for my bed!

Quite a lot for one weekend huh?!  Not for me,  Sunday brought a Handbag and Purse workshop and I was joined by some lovely ladies.  We had a great day and was relaxing in its own way – nice chat, fabulous fluff and wonderful results!

Lets see what this week brings!
